About the Back Yard BBQ Dinner

The Root to Table Culinary Series is excited to visit Mackintosh Fruit Farm, a long-time supporter of our farm-to-table movement! This will be a special “out-of-the-box” event where we will pair followers who are not professional chefs (but do have culinary experience) with our talented Root to Table Chefs. The goal is to highlight the special bond everyone can experience through food.

Dine on farm-fresh ingredients from Mackintosh’s New CSA program. Experience protein, cheese, and other food artisans’ programs showcased at the Mackintosh Food Market. Also enjoy the soothing sounds of renowned Harpist, Berri Garver (former faculty of the Eastman School of Music).

About Mackintosh Fruit Farm

Mackintosh Fruit Farm is a family-owned, pick-your-own farm nestled in the beautiful Clarke County, Virginia. Natives of Clarke County, Lori and Bill Mackintosh have been farming the land where Bill grew up for over 30 years. “We started in 1988 with apple and peach trees. Since then we have added many more varieties of fruit trees and berries, and a wide variety of vegetables. In 2003 we began taking our produce to the Clarke County Farmers’ Market where we enjoy meeting and talking with our customers. We would like the opportunity to introduce you to some of the best tasting fruit that you have ever eaten. Truly tree ripe fruit cannot be shipped so many people never have the chance to eat fruit at its peak of perfection. Come enjoy our sweet, juicy, tree ripened fruit that you can only enjoy to the fullest during its peak of maturity.  This is a great time for families to discuss how our food is grown and where it comes from with the shorter members of the family.” – Lori Mackintosh

Guests can expect a full farm AND culinary experience each time they visit. They have recently renovated their dining area which is now fully enclosed from the elements. They also have their popular Cider Room where adults can relax and try some hard cider, have a glass of wine, or enjoy a local brew. The menu includes a charcuterie board, chips and salsa, or anything from our market café menu. Within the Market, you can also purchase any of the items currently being grown on the farm, specialty items baked by the family, or other artisan products made locally.

David Spivey of The Mountain Kitchen

David Spivey – The Pitmaster Of The Mountain Kitchen

David loves to grill just about anything, but he really loves to grill pork. He’s not a seasonal griller, he grills all year round. I guess you could say he’s kind of like the mailman… No matter if it rains or snows, he must grill!

David’s not a Professional Pitmaster, nor does he claim to be. He simply has a passion for firing up the grill or smoker to cook about anything to share with you!

Yes, David has always loved grilling food, but how he got into smoking meat was completely by accident. You can learn more about David’s hobby became a passion for smoking and grilling by reading his story, “TRASH TREASURE SMOKER“.

Madison Mackintosh – Head Vegetable Gardener

Madison (Maddy) Mackintosh is a 3rd generation farmer at her family’s farm. She utilizes her degree in environmental studies and experiences growing up on the farm as she has a deep passion for growing all sorts of plants, especially vegetables. She operates a year-round hydroponic greenhouse where she grows tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, and a variety of different peppers. The 2-acre garden has a variety of traditional and exotic vegetables, including a handful of dwarf varieties, along with several different melons and herbs. Maddy is very passionate about growing quality produce and supporting local farmers and restaurants. This year, she began a Community Supported Agriculture Program, which highlights her seasonal vegetables, fresh fruits, and a variety of meat and dairy products supplied by several local farms.

Maddy strives to share her passion for locally sourced food with the area’s farmers, restaurants and community members.
